In this series, I’ll be sharing how to get more business for professional make up artist in Malaysia. So you have graduated from a beauty or make up school, what’s next? You can either get a job with your professional skill or you can be a freelance professional make up artist. In this article, we are going to focus on how to get more business as a freelance make up artist.
1. Networking Skills
You need to go out in the world and mix around. Attend dinner parties, wedding functions, and even join a business networking group like BNI or a social group such as JCI. Get your name known that you are a professional make up artist. When people need you, they will know who to call.
2. Partner with Companies
Call up smaller or new bridal, modeling agencies. Bigger agencies will have their own make up artist team but the smaller or new one you can be affiliate with them working on commission basis. Meaning they will provide you clients and you will share the profit with them. I would say 70% to you and 30% as referral fee. Anything more is not worth it. Then again, it depends on you.
3. Give out Free Make up Services or Cheap Ones.
If business is slow or you are starting out, just offer cheap packages to get
your name out. I remember giving RM30 for a dinner make up services but what happens, the lady loves the make up so much she spread around at the dinner and other friends complimented on her. End results? I got more business after that. Think of it as an investment.
4. Market your name online and through social media networking
The internet has given lots of opportunity to everyone to promote their services online and you should not miss it out. Focus on local directory such as 88db and mudah.com and also social media such as youtube, facebook where you can showcase your make up portfolio online. Do not be afraid to explore the online possibilities. You can also join forums such as Malaysian babe to promote yourself.
Just focus on any of these 4 and I am very sure you will get business. This course is geared towards freelance market. Read how much on average you should charge your make up services here.
